The Department of Urology of University of Thessaly was among the first launched in the newly-built University Hospital of Larissa, in 1998. Since then, a number of expert units or outpatients clinics have been organized which include Urodynamics-Neurourology and Female Urology, Prostate and Ultrasound, Paediatric Urology, Andrology, Urologic Oncology and Percutaneous Surgery for Urinary stone disease, being the first in numbers of percutaneous procedures in Greece.

Our Staff members are well-known professionals, all having specialized in world-known Urological Departments abroad. Currently, our daily practice includes the full variety of urological surgery (except for laparoscopic operations). In recent years we have developed collaboration with the Urology Department of the internationally renowned Oncology Center MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas and the Oncology Clinic of the University of Thessaly. As part of this cooperation we have

developed in our department the first Center of Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection in Greece. Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection is a curative operation for patients suffering from Testicular Cancer. This surgery is successfully carried out only in highly Specialized Oncology Centers abroad. So far, our Department has made 15 Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissections with excellent results. Finally, we also hold the first place in carrying out percutaneous interventions in Greece.

As expected for a University Department, we follow the tremendous increase of scientific knowledge in our specialty, designing or co-operating in large international multi-centre studies.

By so, the University Department of Urology in Thessaly is considered a centre of excellence for urological practice in the broader area of Central Greece, treating patients from all around the Country and providing the highest standards in both clinical work as well as in education for younger colleagues.
